US TO ISRAEL: GET OUT NOW October 23, 2001

The Jerusalem Post reports: “Fearing Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has decided to dismantle the Palestinian Authority, the US told Israel yesterday to withdraw immediately from Palestinian-controlled areas and never return.
The stark order came just before Foreign Minister Shimon Peres met with senior US administration officials here to assure them Israel does not plan on remaining indefinitely on Palestinian territory.

The military offensive against six Palestinian cities in the West Bank entered its fifth day yesterday, with heavy fighting around Beit Jala, Bethlehem, Kalkilya, Jenin, Nablus, and Ramallah.

Sharon also faced pressure at home, with the Labor Party threatening to quit the national-unity government if the offensive proves open-ended indefinitely. The Labor faction said it ‘opposes renewed control’ over PA territories.

According to one administration official, Vice President Dick Cheney planned to quiz Peres last night on whether Sharon had shifted tactics following tourism minister Rehavam Ze'evi's assassination last Wednesday and had decided to target PA Chairman Yasser Arafat and his government.

The prospect of such an Israeli offensive sends shudders down the spines of Bush administration officials, who are desperately trying to reduce violence and get the parties moving toward peace negotiations in order to make it easier for Arab coalition partners to cooperate with the US in its war against Osama bin Laden…”
