I saw that some dissidents in Pakistan shot at some US helicopters.

My own guess, and it's only a guess, is that Saddam knows we are coming after him, so he is putting the squeeze on Israel via Palestine, and Pakistan via the Islamic fundamentalist dissidents. He's trying to destabilize our support network in the region. Recent reports about Saudi Arabia also undermine our alliance with that country.

Without allies, we will have a hard time doing this alone. I believe we can do it but the cost will be much greater without allies than with allies.
