Richnorth:

I have appreciated many of your posts over the past 2 months -- especially since September 11th. But, sorry -- your apologies for the supposed intellectual garbage spewed by Charters are very sad. He is using statistics and semantics to deny and/or attempt to minimize a terrible crime against humanity.

For the millions of Jews who perished, or for their survivors who suffered their terrible loss, of course the numbers are vitally important. For how else do you recognise their existence when powerful forces attempt to pretend that millions of them never even existed? But in reality, an horrific crime is an horrific crime. Would the WTC be any less a crime if "only" 700 had died instead of 7,000? These "numbers games" are the fodder of fascists. We shouldn't play them. We should look at fundamental injustice and call it for what it is -- whether in Nazi Germany; in the organised slave-trade that helped build the European empires; in Texas state-executions; in Israeli- and American-occupied Palestine; in Taliban distortion of one of the world's great religions or in the bombing of innocent people in the name of freedom. Sometimes the numbers-game involves a single person, sometimes millions, and sometimes hundreds of thousands. But we lose our souls as human beings when we categorize the severity of the crime based on numbers and at the same time fail to recognize fundamental injustice to individuals.

I didn't think I'd post to GPM again, but these are sad times...

Regards,
Howy
