Almost across the political spectrum, Israelis echoed their leaders' assertions that Israel's battle against Palestinian terror is as justified as the U.S. offensive against Saudi-born Islamic militant Osama bin Laden and his al Qaeda network, which the administration blames for last month's attacks on New York and Washington.
White House press secretary Ari Fleischer rejected the comparison yesterday. "The two situations really are not the same," he said. "Both parties have signed onto the Mitchell agreement," a pact negotiated last year by former senator George Mitchell (D-Maine) that calls for a political solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
The latest argument divided American Jews. Abraham H. Foxman, national director of the Anti-Defamation League, wrote in a letter to Powell yesterday that he was "extremely troubled" by the State Department's call for an Israeli withdrawal. "We consider such comments to be inappropriate and contrary to the long-standing American policy that Israel has the right to defend itself," Foxman said.
