Dolby Laboratories and Sonic Solutions announce certification of Sonic DVD Creator Dolby Digital Encoder

First workstation-based digital audio encoder to receive Dolby approval

NOVATO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 25, 1997--Sonic Solutions announced today that Sonic DVD Creator(TM), the world's first integrated production system for preparing, encoding, authoring, and formatting content for use in DVD mastering and replication environments, has received Dolby Digital (AC-3) audio certification.

Sonic DVD Creator is the first professional audio workstation-based Dolby Digital encoding solution. Dolby certification indicates that audio mastered on Sonic DVD Creator will retain all of its quality when played back on a Dolby-equipped DVD player in the home.

``Dolby certification is an important step in maintaining Sonic's leadership in workstation-based DVD premastering,'' said Mark Ely, Sonic Solutions DVD Product Manager. ``Workstation-based audio encoding is critical for DVD premastering because it gives the user maximum flexibility in supporting all DVD audio formats including stereo, surround, and PCM audio, in both real and out-of-real time.

``In addition, unlike stream encoders which simply compress a given audio asset, Sonic DVD Creator can edit audio sources as it encodes, for example for level balancing or re-synching, which is important for DVD where multiple source files exist.''

``The audio industry abandoned the 'black box' approach to technology ten years ago,'' added Bob Doris, President and CEO of Sonic Solutions. ``As the premier provider of digital audio workstations in the world, Sonic understands that mastering audio requires interactively editing and processing multiple audio assets, which exceeds the 'in one end and out the other' limitation of black box audio encoders.''

Sonic worked closely with Dolby Laboratories to bring Dolby certification to Sonic DVD Creator. John Seaver of Dolby Laboratories said, ``We are delighted to extend our relationship with Sonic Solutions, the recognized leader in digital audio workstation technology, into the exciting new field of DVD premastering. Sonic's world-class video and audio technology is a natural fit for Dolby's high standards.

``By working with Sonic to deliver Dolby Digital surround sound, we are providing the creative community with the most sophisticated tools to deliver the highest-quality DVD product.''

Sonic DVD Creator includes modules for MPEG-2 and MPEG-1 video encoding, audio editing and encoding, authoring, formatting, and playback emulation. The audio encoder in DVD Creator uses the same Emmy-winning technology as SonicStudio, Sonic's powerful digital audio workstation, and features 16- to 24-bit encoding, up to 8 channels, real-time downmix monitoring during encoding, and up to 96 kHz sample rates.

All of DVD Creator's modules are integrated and networked using MediaNet, Sonic's real-time digital media network, enabling cross-platform file sharing and allowing production facilities to streamline the DVD production process.

About Dolby Digital

Dolby Digital sound, formerly known as AC-3, is newest standard for DVD audio encoding. Dolby Digital provides six channel sound -- left and right for music and effects, center for dialogue, two rear speakers for surround sound, and a low-frequency channel for effects.

A key feature of Dolby Digital sound is its ability to play back on a variety of audio setups -- from a fully-configured six (or more) speaker environment down to a single speaker -- without level imbalance, drop-outs, loss of synchronization, or other loss of quality in the listening experience.

About Sonic Solutions

Based in Novato, Sonic Solutions designs and manufactures tools to assist audio and other multimedia professionals in preparing music, video, film, graphics, and entertainment software. SonicStudio is the leading digital audio workstation used around the world by audio professionals to prepare recorded sound for release on Digital Audio Compact Disc.

Sonic systems are also used to prepare sound for film and video soundtracks and for broadcast on radio and television. Sonic DVD Creator is the first professional system for premastering content for the new DVD format.
