What's really stupid is that with PGP, I can build encryption systems that use however many bits I want. My personal key is 2048 bits. It just seems stupid to restrict companies to a very low (and insecure) limit just because we don't want sophisticated encryption to be available elsewhere in the world. Fact is, it already is.

If you're interested in this stuff, you may want to check out Bob Kerrey's "Secure Public Network Act" (boy, that's an Orwellian name, eh?), and Louis Freh's comments lately. All things considered, it's pretty scary stuff.
