I think that their fundamental flaw is that they don't advertise and market their products. No matter what your sales goals, if you don't market, you don't sell product. If AMD started advertising for the Athlon (reasonably good advertisements, not crapjobs with trains and human blue men!) from the day that the processor was introduced, then their investment would have been well paid for by now, as they would not have had to depress prices to this insane amount to keep their market share.

Of course, that's just my opinion. :)
