The $500 yearly add-on is for people (like me) whose spouses opt out of health-care coverage at their place of employment and instead go under my health-care family coverage (which is better). In addition, I'll also have to pay the regular annual spike in insurance rates.

To answer your question, yes, we did bargain with the company in the mid '90s that an employee's health-care insurance costs may not exceed X percent of total cost. Believe it's 25-75. We've got our lawyer looking at whether the $500 add-on is legit ... whether it's part of the negotiated cap ... and whether the company can legally ask its employees if spouses have rejected health coverage at their place of employment. We'll also ask the company where we stand presently with the 25-75 formula. Management says we're still below that figure; may need to bring in an independent auditor to confirm that. We'll see.

Union dues are about $13 a week. $10 of that amount goes directly to Joe Biden's and Hillary Clinton's re-election warchests.
