Pope looks east:

Pope in major appeal to China for diplomatic ties

By Philip Pullella, Reuters, 10/24/01

ROME -- Pope John Paul II, in a move with possibly major political repercussions, offered an olive branch to China Wednesday, apologizing for errors of the colonial past and pleading for the establishment of diplomatic relations.

In his appeal to Beijing's communist government, which prohibits Catholics from recognizing his authority, the pope said the world was facing "profound disquiet" and would benefit if both sides had direct dialogue.

"The normalization of relations between the People's Republic of China and the Holy See would undoubtedly have positive repercussions for humanity's progress," he said in a message to a convention on dialogue between China and the West.

"I express the hope that concrete forms of communication and cooperation between the Holy See and the People's Republic of China may soon be established," he said.

China is one of the few countries without diplomatic relations with the Vatican and those Chinese Catholics who do recognize the pope as their spiritual leader worship underground.
