I take exception to your description of Bush "trying to keep hysteria alive until...." This is so far off the mark that it bears no response. One shouldn't resort to hyperbole no matter how impassioned a partisan one becomes.

That we are in a scarry situation even worse for the general civilian public at home than compared to any of the world wars we have been in during the last century is obvious. The enemy is HERE not "over there" as the old WW1 song went. So internal security is critical. In WW2 the watch word was "that a small leak can sink a great ship."

I personally don't feel threatened, but God knows that folks who have never gone to war in the 40s and 50s as I did, probably are more stressed than I. My alarm immune system has been well buffered and desensitized, but I am madder than hell that we have been invaded by such foul adversaries.

Having great confidence in the staff that surrounds this President I don't worry about what steps they take to protect our insides and outsides. My memories go back to blackouts on the West Coast, rationing and wartime savings Bonds. If they choose to stop me in the street near an airbase or other because of my dark complexion or for any reason I will happily give them my IDs. I was not offended either when merchants requested IDs before accepting my credit card or now my HMO wants to see my drivers license picture. I don't take these things personally.

Congress will do what it always had done = Try to manufacture votes for itself. The majority party will strive to please their constituents and the minority likewise. Lots of money is wasted this way. Harry Truman was a Democrat I voted for and who ultimately sent me to war again. But his motto was "The buck stops here." I'll always admire him for that. Maybe the buck will stop again?

I am not in favor of drilling in the artic (many are), nor do I think that star wars is a good idea (especially in the present light of sinister infiltrations). I suggest that you do as most of us do and write your Congress people and the White House giving your opinions and objections. That's what this republic is all about.

Raging at the quarterback of our home team from the stands when we are just in the first quarter of play is not helpful, but you can't offend much in this narrow forum when most are cheering our side on. If he fumbles the ball in the fourth quarter when we need 6 points to win, I might holler too. But I am a contrarian here, of course, by the title of the board.

In a democratic society healthy debate and the game goes on.
