Another factor in the Democrats' favor in '02 and '04 is that they have more potential for growth. It is my opinion that about everyone who was thinking of voting Republican a year ago did so, and the GOP succeeded in winning the White House even though the other guy got 500,000 more votes. So where does the party go from here? How does the Republican Party increase its base? The white suburban and white rural base is about tapped out.

Frankly, I only see two major groups the Republicans can pursue: union members and Hispanics, and GWB has made obvious overtures to these two groups in the past year.

Looking ahead to '04, it is my opinion that the Democratic coalition of states is much more solid than the Republican coalition of states. I don't see much chance of a Republican presidential candidate winning New York, Massachusetts or California in '04, but I do see a chance of the Democratic candidate winning Florida, Arkansas, Missouri, Ohio.

We shall see.
