That hatreds exist should not be surprising. If they didn't exist there would be no conflict. The advantage of listening to the arguments of the "other side" is that it is the only way to understand the dimensions of the problem. While I would argue that Mr. Amayreh's perceptions are flawed and not well grounded in historical fact, I would thank him for articulating them because they provide a basis for discussion. If it is true that one of the root problems is the misperception that America is "against democracy" in Muslim countries than this should be easily addressed, and I should think the U.S. would welcome the opportunity to correct this misperception.
