A few years ago, I visited Sevastopol, a city in the Crimea
which had only a year before been opened to western visitors. It was here in this region that the Crimean War was fought. I visited this memorial.

I realized that I was one of the few Canadians to visit
this battlefield. There are thousands of French and British
soldiers buried there in unmarked graves. Many veterans of this war were granted land and came to Canada. The Russians and Ukrainians were respectful of the our bus tour of Americans and Canadians and very knowledgable. We stopped at Balaclava and the tour guide recited this poem from memory:
