I don't think a single x86 application is able to address more than 32 bits, even if the OS is able to address more bits. This is what I'm getting at, that applications need to be recompiled and rewritten to take advantage of x86-64. Whether the OS is able to address 36, 48, or 64 bits is irrelevant.
