Ay, there's the rub. Since Vietnam we (America) haven't been involved in a fight that wasn't extremely one-sided and photogenically manageable. The situation increasingly reminds me of pre-WWI in that there is now more than one entire generation that has no idea what it means to "go to war". Europe had been at relative peace for so long that when that war started young men signed up thinking they were off on a romantic adventure.

I strongly oppose the sanitization of "war" in our media and by our government. There are times when fighting is the right thing to do, but it is vitally important that we understand exactly what it means to be at war.

How else can we be in a position to weigh the benefits against the costs?
