Today's column by Jesse Berst (http://www4.zdnet.com/anchordesk/story/story_1036.html) regarding msft's java performance has really fanned the flames over at ZD Net. You may way want to check it out. But first, read this reply that one of his reader posted:

I agree with David sinn
One of the reasons that Java runs faster is because the MS interpreter using a virtual machine (Microsoft's) that does not adhere to the standards for Java. Microsoft
is trying to Kill two birds with one stone, so to speak, killing Java standards that it cannot control and undercutting Netscape at the same time. We have all been at
Microsoft's mercy with our operating systems, now that control is being transferred to the web. If the latest round of tricks is not an anti-Trust situation it should be.
Many of the articles that have been written lately are looking at the situation from the view of how it affects Netscape or How it affects Java, the two outlooks are
one in the same.

1. Microsoft has deviated from the Java Standards in its Java Development environment to lure programmers into writing Java Code that is faster and more flexible,
but, tied to the Explorer and Windows.

2. Microsoft has optimized sites, that are created with Microsoft Development Packages, to the IE and windows. This gives the user and sometimes even the
developer the allusion that Explorer is better. If Netscape and Sun developed an operating system I am sure that their versions of the browser and Java could be
made to run faster on their operating system and slower on Microsoft's.

I for one, am tired of having microsoft products shoved down my throat because Microsoft uses its foothold in the oerating system to Kill any product that threaten
its control (remember Dr Dos, Geo Works etc). If it is not against the Law it should be. I am all for free enterprise, but not virtual monopolies and not behind the
scene machinations that limit my choices to Microsoft.
