Hi CB,

Re: To the extent that they do things that we don't want them to do because they think they know better than we do - well, that's a problem. Unfortunately, they probably do know what we need better than we do.

They need to talk to us, and we need to listen.

Well, that's just not the way the spy game works, now is it? Keeping secrets is nature of the business. Informing the general public isn't part of the plan. I'm afraid I can't agree with you that they know our needs better than we do. That strikes me as a nanny-state elitism and incipient feudal subjugation. I'd rather be able to acquire the information I need to freely make informed decisions. The structure of secret police systems is anathema to the free exchange of ideas and information.

BTW, when I marched in Washington against the Viet Nam war in 1969, among our group, I was accompanied by the father of one of my friends who lived in the area. He was still employed by the CIA, having started his career back in the OSS days. It was gratifying to see that a spook could express his protest against an evil war. :)
