re: . I am very, very, very happy that it's Bush, not Gore

Cobalt, I find this kind of unfair -- Gore never got a chance to put his team in; we don't know what he would have done. GWB, almost by right of birth, has put an experienced team in, but I for one would feel better if Cheney were President.

Gore was never a favorite of mine (in the campaign, he seemed paralyzed by caution), but he wouldn't have had to start by learning where Uzbeckistan was. He is an intelligent and well-educated man.

There's a tug of war going on between State and Defense, and GWB is no strong candidate to steer a level course between them.

I do not share some people's admiration for Colin Powell; I think his love of diplomacy and coalitions as ends in themselves reflects muddled thinking and amounts to appeasing and rewarding terrorism, something we can very ill afford right now. He seems particularly determined to slight and bully all our real allies while trying desperately to buy the friendship (or just the show of friendship) from some very doubtful allies.
