RK, a few other threads on SI these days make Joe McCarthy look like a liberal wallflower, spewing their Rambo fantasies about mass roundups reminiscent more of Germany in the 1930's than even McCarthy's worst days.

The problem with trying to keep an eye on everyone is sheer numbers - once you secure the pilot schools, you need to check all commercial driving schools (an 18-wheeler packed with a fertilizer bomb in a downtown area can kill a few thousand easily). Throw in all construction machinery licenses (a bulldozer can punch a hole in a department store wall, set off a few pounds of plastique and there go hundreds more). Then you have everyone with access to chemicals that could theoretically be mixed into explosives or other chemical weapons.....

You see the dimensions of the problem. Fortunately our security services are responding to every "maybe" report they get and certainly making it harder for terrorists to operate.

A number of SI posters have this fantasy that we can achieve perfect control and security - control our borders, expel all illegal aliens, monitor every person boarding a plane, bus or train, etc.

The country is too vast and populated to believe that can ever happen. We increase our awareness, report suspicious behavior where we see it but - most important - don't give into paranoia enough to let the wannabe McCarthy's and Rambos ever take power. And we "win" this peculiar war by emerging with our freedom and Constitution intact despite the desperate wishes from some that we tear it up until we feel "safe" again.

That's the mistake Germany made in 1933. I, for one, take great comfort knowing that most of the hatred and stupidity I see spewed elsewhere on SI has no advocates where it counts in Washington.

Pardon the speech.......
