1xRTT
He is of the USA and wireless ain't his game (even though he owns some NOK).
Poor man missed the whole 2600% QCOM ride in 1999 (worth 753% today so still one of the better tech rides ever).
He is obviously influenced by Orwell, and Seybold, and Gilder, La FUDge, and Jacobs so 1xRTT which was once an interim step to 3G has now been transmogrified into 3G, thus to citizens of the US 1xRTT IS 3G in true Orwellian fashion.
<< (GPRS??) >>
No way.
Until AWS completes their conversion to GPRS at the end of 2002 (even though VoiceStream is pretty well built out and same for Cingular in their GPRS networks) GPRS won't get much play in the press ... and even then it will only be here for the blink of an eye as they move quickly to third generation EDGE.
Actually, that transmogrification was fun to watch. The UWCC guys really started it. TDD became an IMT-2000 standard so UWCC said EDGE is 3G. CDG guys said, wait a minute if they be 3G, we be 3G, so to heck with this "interim step" stuff.
With the WRC-2000 changes in identifying 3G spectrum, what is 3G and what isn't is kind of muddled.
Here in the US, 1xRTT sorta is and sorta isn't.
We like to be different.
Heck, the great Dr. William C.Y. Lee always maintained that AMPS was 1G, TDMA (GSM) was 2G and cdma was really 3G and he now characterizes LAS-CDMA as 4G.
