Many historians believe that if Chamberlain hadn't signed the Munich pact in 1938, but had instead gone to war immediately with Germany, an unprepared England would have been defeated easily.

Then I submit to those historians that Chamberlain should have stopped Hitler sooner than that. Between 1933 and 1939 Germany went from one of the weakest nations in Europe to easily the single strongest. SOMEWHERE in there Chamberlain and the rest of Europe dropped the ball. You can't get around that.
