Hi Carl,

Good post. Thanks for the research on the "imaginary friend" quote. It was from a list of attributed one liners and I have no idea if Arafat ever said such a thing. I did enjoy the secularist viewpoint, nonetheless.

As far as the world getting better, you're right. I was gratified to listen to former Sen. George McGovern talk about world hunger, and find that the percentage of the world's population going to sleep hungry every night has decreased from ~35% in the mid 1970's to ~18% today. There is some good news in this world after all.

I recently read a fascinating book about our relationship with Japan, that goes a long way to explaining how they've been able to prosper under the yoke of American hegemon. It's called "Blowback", by Chalmers Johnson, who had fairly intimate knowledge of the State Deptartment and the DoD's relationships to Japan, particularly with regard to our fabulous military facilities on Okinawa.

Re: The problem with disarming completely is that the world has not yet become completely safe for democracy. But the trend is definitely in our favor.

I didn't suggest disarming completely. I merely mean to point out some of the absurdities of life. Like the 6,000 nuclear tipped ICBMs we still have pointed at Russia. Does this seem sensible, 10 years after the collapse of communism?

Best, Ray :)
