His remarks highlighted the growing pressure that America’s war on terrorism is putting on its 50-year-old strategic relationship with the Gulf state. A spate of recent US editorials and articles has portrayed Saudi Arabia as an unreliable ally that has failed to co-operate with the investigation into the September 11 atrocities. Publicly the Bush Administration has insisted that it is very happy with the kingdom’s co-operation.
