Saudi ruler rails at US media criticism

FROM MICHAEL THEODOULOU IN NICOSIA

SCATHING articles about Saudi Arabia in US newspapers have provoked a furious response from Crown Prince Abdullah, the de facto ruler of Saudi Arabia, who said they were inspired by religious prejudice.
“The vicious Western media attack against the Kingdom is only because of the ancient spite against Islam and Saudi Arabia’s commitment to Islam,” he told a group of government ministers and newspaper editors. His remarks highlighted the growing pressure that America’s war on terrorism is putting on its 50-year-old strategic relationship with the Gulf state.

A spate of recent US editorials and articles has portrayed Saudi Arabia as an unreliable ally that has failed to co-operate with the investigation into the September 11 atrocities.

Publicly the Bush Administration has insisted that it is very happy with the kingdom’s co-operation.
