Jerome, you want a "Republican scandal": here is one:
Powell told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that Bin Laden's Al-Qaeda organization is a clear case of a terrorist group, as "probably" are the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia and the Real Irish Republican Army in Northern Ireland. "But then you start to run into areas where one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter, and that's where you have to apply judgment,'' he added. "To test whether groups qualify as targets against which the United States could sustain an alliance, one would have to ask whether they have a better way to 'express grievances', 'change the political problem,' and 'gain their rights,' Powell said. "These are difficult calls to make... You can be quite challenged in explaining these differences with respect to the Middle East,'' he added. "
No Mr Powell, you are completely wrong, to test if a group of people is "Freedom Fighters" or "Blood thirsty Terrorists", just look at what they are targeting, if they target innocent civilians, they are terrorists, if they target military installations, they are freedom fighters. The Macquis in France during WWII never put bombs on civilian trains in Germany, they derailed military trains, bombed Gestapo head-quarters and other military targets, they were "Freedom Fighters". Going into a "disco" and blowing up teenagers, is pure terrorism, going into a central bus station and showering bullets on innocent passengers, is terrorism, going into a church and killing worshipers, as in Pakistan today, is terrorism. Powell, wise up man. There is no grey area, it is black and white, your targets paint you as either a terrorist, like 5000 New Yorkers, or a freedom fighter (as the Taliban once used to be when their targets were occupying soviet forces).
