MIPS is not Big Endian, it is a switch hitter. SGI chose to use the Big Endian mode for compatibility with the 68K (if I recall correctly, even DEC used the Big Endian mode although VAX was Little Endian). Although there would be significant porting effort, Irix can be ported to a Little Endian architecture, just as Linux can be run on either Little Endian or Big Endian processors.
