Good to see that AFFX doesn't yet have the microarray market entirely to itself. Do you have any feel for how Agilent's product stacks up against AFFX's (in general terms, rather than this particular effort) ?

PALO ALTO, Calif. & RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct.29, 2001--Agilent Technologies Inc. (NYSE:A - news) and Paradigm Genetics (Nasdaq:PDGM - news) today announced a multi-year collaboration to commercialize the first whole Arabidopsis thaliana genome microarray for use in gene expression studies. Its content will represent all relevant genes necessary to conduct gene expression analysis of Arabidopsis, one of the most widely studied plant genomes.
This unique microarray is the result of research conducted at Paradigm leveraging both Agilent's Technology Access Program (TAP) for custom printed DNA microarrays and Paradigm's gene function expertise. Paradigm will collaborate with Agilent on the design and commercialization of this microarray, which is expected to be available by the end of the year. Agilent will design and manufacture the microarray using its industrial-scale SurePrint technology. Paradigm will receive volume discounts on microarrays and royalties from co-developed products.
``As one of our first TAP customers, Paradigm took full advantage of our flexible, inkjet-based DNA microarray design and production to create a commercial microarray product,'' said Barney Saunders, vice president and general manager of Agilent's BioResearch Solutions. ``All researchers using Arabidopsis as a model organism will have access to an advanced tool to drive their research and development efforts forward.''
``Agilent's flexible printed DNA microarray format allowed us to reach this milestone for the development of a high-content, high-quality Arabidopsis genome microarray,'' said Jeff Woessner, director of Paradigm's DNA Technologies. We are extremely impressed by Agilent's printed microarray capabilities and are confident that users of this new microarray will be equally pleased. This microarray will become the standard by which institutions and the research community can compare results of Arabidopsis gene expression profiling. It will also facilitate the development of a publicly available database of gene expression profiling results for Arabidopsis. The Arabidopsis genome microarray is Paradigm's first product with Agilent, and we are happy to be collaborating with a leader in the gene expression profiling technology area in the development of more products.``
The Agilent Arabidopsis Genome Microarray is printed on high-quality glass and delivered on standard 1`` x 3'' glass slides that can be read on many commercial microarray scanners, as well as on Agilent's 48-slide, automated DNA microarray scanner (G2565AA). This new microarray will be commercialized as a ready-to-use application to include user protocols, service and support, as well as access to Agilent's microarray labeling and hybridization reagents.
Availability
Agilent will be formulating a pre-launch interest list. All interested parties are invited to register for upcoming information about this product by sending an e-mail to: dna_microarrays@agilent.com.
