Zeev, anyone who wants to own UUMC shares, should buy UUMC shares. Buying SNDK shares provides a delayed reaction that is hard to predict when, how, and to what extent any losses or gains will be reflected.

My sources tell me that Toshiba is trying to shrink more than just die widths. They have lost so much money that they might sell most anything ... including their joint interest with SNDK.

SNDK announced a proposed workforce cut of 25% on 10/17. Simultaneously, an article appeared about how SNDK memory cards worked so well in U.S. Helicopters. OK .. a few thousand U.S. helicopters each have one SNDK flash card and it works. If you assume 64MB each and TEN TIMES the retail price for the same flash card at Best Buy, the whole deal is worth only a small fraction of what SNDK will charge off for firing 25% of its employees.

Toshiba is losing its arse. SNDK is selling below its production cost, laying off employees, and reporting serious investment losses.

You might want to bet that the worst is over and that SNDK will rocket next week. The problem is that most companies don't fire 1/4 of their work force on week one and then report record profits in week two. More often, they report "one-time charges" in future quarters that make a mess out of earnings computations.

If it is going to take a year for SNDK to work out its problems, why not sell now and stuff the money into your pillowcase? You can always unstuff that pillowcase once the dust settles. Or perhaps it's just time to find new fish to fry ...?
