From Briefing: 07:06 ET Bomb Detection Equipment : WSJ article focusing on the implementation of bomb detection equipment highlights InVision (INVN) and L-3 Communications (LLL). The two are the only companies certified by the FAA. Currently fewer than 150 of the machines are used in the U.S., scattered among 47 airports. Costs of operation and high false alarm rates (about 22%) have airlines concerned that expanded use could considerably lengthen airport check-in time... Following Sept 11 the FAA is considering moving up date requiring all bags to be scanned for explosives to 2004 from 2009... To ensure fair competition, Congress has required the FAA buy the same number of units from INVN as from LLL, even though LLL machines have been plagued with questions about bugs
