A horrific thing like this would solidify Americans against the perpetrators of the crime.

I think that is their intention. The more strident the American position, the more calls to use nuclear force, the more Christain prayer vigils, will lead to Muslim unity and radicalism. They know how to play you and your buds like a Strativarious.
