Pearl Harbor did not "render us incapable of mounting any effective defense against the Japanese." It was only a temporary setback. Our aircraft carriers escaped unscathed because they were out to sea at the time, and most of the warships that were damaged at Pearl Harbor were back in action within 18 months.
