I prefer to call myself a "realist". I may tend to fall on the negative side more heavily, but the phrase, "better safe than sorry" did not develop overnight. Missing something really good has never had the impact of taking part in something really bad. Would you rather give up all the extra things which were pleasant surprises obtained from taking chances or looking on the bright side (quick stock gains, a scratch-off lottery ticket for $1000, the thrill of cliff diving, a drug-induced high (although pain medication is good), or would you rather avoid all the bad things which could come from the same tactics (bankruptcy, a broken spine, death for everyone in your "high" driven car)? I'm not advocating never taking a chance or never looking at the positive side, but at some point, there are times when the preponderance of the evidence is so compelling, that to push forward in spite of that simply to try and get another "really good extra thing you could really live without" is now stupidity. And that is where I believe anyone is at this point in buying stocks or keeping all their retirement "in for the long haul" or "I'm not selling now" or "they always come back" or "I'm a real American" or "I'm not doing anything" or "the people on CNBC and the President are positive".

I remain,

SOROS
