JLA, even if the autopilot was not smart enough to actually land the plane, it could get the plane to a landable area. The pilot could then get control back, perhaps on final with enough time to complete the landing.

On less sophisticated aircraft, the auto-pilot emergency system would simply broadcasts an emergency message and go into a holding pattern.

I would also study the feasibility of using some sort of sleeping agent to knock out the cabin inhabitants.
