An interesting book on the subject is Fundamental Perspectives on International Law by William R. Slomanson, professor of international law at Western State University in San Diego.

Definitions: Nation -- "a practical association of human individuals who consider themselves to be a nation(on the basis of a shared religion, history, language or any other common feature.)"

Grub!
State -- "A person of international law [which] should possess the following qualifications: (a) a permanent population; (b) a defined territory; (c) government; (d) capacity to enter into relations with other States."

Nation-State -- "the joinder of two terms, typically referring to a specific geographic area constituting a sovereign entity and possibly containing more than one group of nationals (individual citizens) based on shared religion, history, or language."

These are the definitions when I use these terms.
