I think we act principally in our self-interest, or at least our government's self interest. We have, at times, done very immoral and potentially illegal things to more than a few countries.
As for the issue of integrity and unselfish, I would say the Peace Corps, and numerous humanitarian types of aid represent what Bird Dog was speaking of. However, the type of foreign aid that Israel and Egypt reap are not the same. We supply Israel protection by bolstering its defense. We pay off Egypt to be nice to Israel. Saudi Arabia works with us to ensure the House of Sad has lots of unfettered moolah to roll around in like cats in catnip.
All are related to Jewish votes and oil, as our interests.
From the Armenians, to Iraq's Kurds, to the Cambodians, to the recent Hutu/Tutsi massacre, we usually ignore massive exterminatory events. In fact, like other Western nations, we dismissed Hitler's extermination camps till they were 'discovered' at war's end. Why was there not an outcry earlier? Because anti-Semitism was pretty widespread even in this good land, at the time.
Comparatively, there's a ton to love about the US, but that does not mean we are perfect. I love it enough to want to improve it, which is not only sensible and just, but patriotic, imo. |
