TOKYO (Nikkei)NEC Corp. (NIPNY or 6701) will commercialize by the end of 2002 a personal computer server that can simultaneously operate 512 microprocessor units made by Intel Corp. (INTC), the Nihon Keizai Shimbun reports in its Tuesday morning edition, citing company sources.

Connecting the MPUs in parallel gives the server a processing capability similar to that of a supercomputer.

Despite having a processing capacity similar to that of Unix servers commonly used in corporate information systems, the new server will be priced several tens of million yen cheaper than Unix models.

Most PC servers contain only one or two MPUs, but NEC connects MPUs in parallel in the new server, using technology obtained when developing large mainframes.

The new product contains 64bit McKinley MPUs, which Intel plans to start shipping in spring 2002. The McKinleys can process more data than current 32bit Pentium processors.

NEC will sell the new server to industries that need highspeed data processing, such as for gene analysis.

In JanuaryJune, domestic PC server shipments increased 30.3% year on year, with NEC's 22% share leading the market. Overall shipments are expected to rise by over 20% in 2001, and the company aims to expand its market share by developing highperformance models.
