Wouldn't it solve this whole argument rather nicely if everyone would simply agree that ideologues of all descriptions tend to be intolerant of dissenting views, and that the degree of intolerance is generally proportional to the degree of commitment to the ideology in question?

It seems an easy thing to agree on, being about as close to self-evident as any proposition I've heard.

Of course the type of intolerance one is likely to observe in a given milieu is related to the ideological demographics of that milieu, but that does not support any conclusion about the relative propensity toward intolerance of any particular ideology.
