I was ten during the Cuban Missile Crisis, living in Baton Rouge, one of the few places the Cuban missiles could hit, and one of the few places it would make sense to hit (country's biggest oil refinery). I don't know if they did this all over the country but all the kids were given "dog tags" to wear, the same type of metal ID on a chain that they wear in the military. To ID us in case of attack. I never did get over that. I still wake up when I hear jet planes in the night.

One of the things they told us to do in the event of attack was scour the bathtub clean and then fill it with water.

Some things to have on hand:
-battery operated radio and batteries;
-bottled water;
-canned food;
-manual can opener (doh!);
-flashlights and batteries;
-camper stove and lantern, with fuel;
-matches;
-first aid kit;
-toilet paper and plastic bags;
-duct tape to seal off windows and doors;
-if someone needs medication, keep those prescriptions filled.

Pretty much the same as you'd do for a blizzard or a hurricane.

We are about 15 miles from what would make sense as Ground Zero, so that's what I think about. I expect that the traffic would be too bad trying to get away so we should just plan on sticking around.

I guess some have built fallout shelters and laid in a year's worth of food and water and all that.
