Some news: Cingular to Upgrade Entire U.S. Mobile Network NEW YORK (Reuters) - Cingular Wireless on Tuesday said it plans to upgrade its U.S. mobile network to wireless technology that delivers data 30 times faster than standard mobile phone networks. The No. 2 U.S. mobile carrier, a joint venture of BellSouth Corp. (NYSE:BLS - news) and SBC Communications Inc. (NYSE:SBC - news), said the move to EDGE (Enhanced Data Rates for Global Evolution) technology will allow users to receive data at up to 384,000 bits a second -- fast enough for full-motion video to be delivered wirelessly. Sweden's Ericsson (news - web sites) (ERICb.ST), Finland's Nokia (news - web sites) (NOK1V.HE) and Germany's Siemens (SIEGn.DE) -- Europe's three leading wireless equipment suppliers -- have been selected to provide equipment required for the project, Cingular said. Company officials expect the upgrade to cost just over $3 billion, according to sources quoted in a Wall Street Journal report on Tuesday. A Cingular spokesman declined to put a price-tag on the project. EDGE networks represent transitional technology that makes it easier to eventually switch to advanced ``third-generation'' networks. The move to EDGE will begin with the installation of GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) data network and GSM (Global System for Mobile Telecommunications) voice technology on Cingular's existing networks. GSM is the world's leading digital wireless technology, used in well over 100 countries, but it is used by less than 10 percent of U.S. mobile phone subscribers.
