In the U.S., they quickly established families that did business in the brutal tradition of Russian gangs - tight hierarchy, connections made while doing time in the Soviet prison system, and a requirement of two murders to reach high positions. The families, says the Israeli police source, "always kept up their connections in Russia" - ties that would become lucrative after the Soviet Union collapsed.
The Organizatsiya, which now numbers about 300 members, muscled in on existing mob operations in America - trafficking in drugs and illegal guns, and running prostitution and protection rings. From the Mafia, they grabbed a share of the "business" of robbing import warehouses at Kennedy Airport. They also set up legitimate businesses but used fraud to evade taxes. Three or four of the families are based in Brooklyn. Besides New York, the Organizatsiya operates mainly in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Florida.
