Confusion surrounds the whereabouts of 3 retired Pakistani Nuclear scientists

KARACHI, Oct 30: Reports suggest that government has handed over three retired nuclear scientists accused of having links with Osama bin Laden to United States authorities.

Among those said to be handed over to a joint team of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Central Intelligence Agency are Sultan Bashiruddin Mehmood along with two of his retired colleagues -- former chief engineer of Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission Abdul Majeed, and former PAEC scientist Mirza Yousaf.

Mehmood was released on October 26 after being "cleared" by security agencies, but was again picked up from his home. Mehmood after retirement founded a NGO called 'Ummah Reconstruction' to carry out welfare activities in Afghanistan.

The US and British intelligence agencies alleged that the NGO was directly linked to Laden's Al Qaeda network. They claimed that Mehmood's team was trying to develop nuclear technology for Laden.

However Major General Rashid Qureshi, head of the military Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) department, told reporters in Islamabad that Mehmood has not been re-arrested. He said the process of questioning was continuing.

Qureshi added in a manner of after thought that Mehmood was not keeping good health and "I think he is in hospital."

A Foreign Office Spokesman, Aziz Ahmed Khan, attending the daily press briefing along Qureshi, said in response to a question that the reports were "Totally baseless" that the former scientist has been handed over to the American Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) or Central Investigations Agency (CIA).
