News Release
Mr. David Ward reports
MOSAID Technologies Inc. has signed a worldwide, non-exclusive patent
licensing agreement with Oki Electric Industry Co., Ltd. of Tokyo, Japan.
Through this agreement, Oki obtains a licence to MOSAID's patent portfolio,
while MOSAID obtains a cross-licence for Oki's patents. Financial details could
not be disclosed under the terms of this transaction.
Oki is a supplier of semiconductor products and among the world's top 20
DRAM manufacturers. The company is the sixth DRAM manufacturer to join the
growing list of companies that have taken a licence to MOSAID's patent portfolio.
MOSAID believes that all companies that manufacture mainstream DRAM
products, including single and double data rate (DDR) synchronous DRAM, as
well as Rambus(R) DRAM, use its patented circuit technology. MOSAID has
also found its patented circuit technology incorporated in the embedded DRAM
products of several major memory manufacturers.
Since 1999, MOSAID has announced patent licensing agreements with Fujitsu,
NEC, Toshiba, Hitachi and Mitsubishi Electric. These companies, together with
Oki, are estimated to hold close to 23 per cent of DRAM market share
worldwide based on 2000 revenues, according to Gartner Dataquest.
MOSAID recently notified two additional semiconductor manufacturers of patent
infringement. The company now has a total of 11 DRAM manufacturers on notice
for patent infringement, and is currently in licensing discussions with several of
these companies. MOSAID has also initiated litigation against Samsung
Electronics Co., Ltd. for patent infringement.
"Our agreement with Oki demonstrates our ability to conclude new patent
licensing agreements despite the continued downturn in worldwide memory
markets and our current litigation against Samsung," said George Cwynar,
president and chief executive officer, MOSAID Technologies. "We have a strong
patent portfolio and the financial resources to aggressively pursue fair
compensation for the use of our intellectual property, preferably through
negotiation."
MOSAID has a strong track record of developing innovative memory designs,
and the company's patent portfolio continues to grow. During the first quarter
ended July 27, 2001, MOSAID was issued its 100th patent and filed an
additional 14 patent applications, for a total of 280 patents issued or pending at
the end of the quarter.
