Hawkmoon, I guess you meant no compunction. They used compulsion.

Actually, the land under a farmer's field is owned by the government. It's that eminent domain stuff Cobalt Blue mentioned. In Kiwiland, the land under our house is held by us in Fee Simple. That means that we are granted a perpetual right to occupy it by the Crown [which means the government, though it's actually Queen Elizabeth, who is not a pommy bastard. She's well-respected in Kiwiland.]

To test it in the USA, buy a little island and announce that you have left the union, then start introducing your own laws and immigration and other policies and see how long it is before the USA Federal agents start sending in SWAT teams and carting you off to a judge.
