The under-$1-a-gallon gas signs cropping up in parts of North Austin aren't a mirage. A good old-fashioned gasoline price war has broken out, the result of global economic forces, the emergence of new players in the gas retail market and local competition.
The price war started about two weeks ago, and by Monday afternoon, some gas stations were selling regular unleaded for 97.9 cents a gallon. The citywide average is $1.15.
Luis Don Juan, a manager at the RaceTrac at 9200 Burnet Road, said the station was selling 13,000 to 14,000 gallons before the price war. By Friday morning, when prices reached 99 cents, his station was selling 18,000 gallons a day. On Saturday, the price dropped to 98 cents.
