Hitachi-NEC memory venture delayed
By Reuters
October 30, 2001, 12:00 p.m. PT
TOKYO--Hitachi, Japan's biggest electrical equipment maker, said Tuesday that its Elpida dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chip venture with NEC may be delayed until January 2003.

"A consensus seems to have emerged that it'll start operation in January of 2003," Hitachi Executive Vice President Yoshiki Yagi told a news conference.

The companies announced last month they would delay the installation of equipment at the joint venture's planned cutting-edge plant until September 2002 from December of this year, adding that production could start as soon as one month after that. Production had originally been expected to start next spring.

Several of Japan's big chipmakers are racking up massive losses on their DRAM operations this year as the technology slump and intense price competition from Korean and Taiwanese rivals has sent spot prices for standard DRAM chips tumbling by 90 percent over the past year.

Yagi said on Tuesday that DRAM chips would account for about half of the $1.04 billion (127 billion yen) operating loss Hitachi predicted for its semiconductor division in the business year to next March.
