Hi Carl,

Re: But where US forces would be most in danger is in long garrison duties, and that is where the Turks have already agreed to come in. Maybe the Pakistanis will get involved too.

Sort of like the British garrison force from 1839-42? I think you are right to be concerned.

As far as our sending in the 101st or the 3rd Divisions, I think you can put that one to rest. Neither force has the right equipment for the terrain in Afghanistan. The Gulf War as gift for our military. There couldn't have been a more benign theatre for the M1A1, the Humvee, and all the other paraphernalia of our heavy divisions. Afghanistan is completely different, and entirely more hostile to the sort of theatre engagement that our strategic planners in the Pentagon have been equiping us for for the last few decades.

The other consideration that you might want to cogitate on is how in the world you'd get the heavy divisions into Afghanistan? I can just see the chaos ensuing from trying to land an expeditionary force at Karachi, or anywhere on the Pakistani coast. And to bring the units in from the Mid East or Germany via the trans-Siberian railroad and down through Uzbekistan makes the quarter-master's life a nightmare. Heaven's sakes, even with the Russians as allies, I can't see a huge American force coming out of Central Asia. The logistics are simply too daunting, and/or the drain on the American treasury simply too monumental to consider. Remember, empires can go broke fighting too far from home for too long. Ask the Brits.

Best, Ray :)
