Hi Carl,

Re: British were conquering Christians, the Turks would be nation building fellow Islamics.

Whoa, big boy. You're making an assumption that Afghani warlords, the Taliban and the Afghan Arabs are interested in nation building. That's a leap of faith I'm not willing to make.

Re: The real reason that everyone is glad that Bush is in the White House instead of Clinton

What's this "everyone" nonsense, kimosabe? To my mind, Clinton was a season politician who gave a fair bit of wonkish though to foreign policy, and never had us involved in anything potentially leading to a nuclear catastrophe during his years in office. Bush, OTOH, said early on in this crisis that he'd blockade Afghanistan's harbors. (For the utterly clueless, Afghanistan is land-locked. Think about it.....)

Re: . If they (i.e. Taliban tanks) were useless, then why does the Taliban have so many of them?

Ummm, CIA funding?

Re: The US military is designed to fight in the mountains.

Oh, yeah, right. That went really well up above Anzio and in the Central Highlands in Viet Nam. We really kicked butt. Uh-huh.

Re: There are sections of Afghanistan that are considerably less mountainous than parts of Germany or Korea,

And, of course, out of courtesy, Osama and Omar are going to concentrate their forces there for our benefit.

Re: This is a reasonable concern. My guess is that the most convenient thing would be to move them through Pakistan.

Bye, bye Mussaraf. Hello ISI Taliban partisans. Nationalism trumps transit any day.

Re: . But I'm not going to worry about it, I can hardly be expected to solve all the military's problems for them.
Whew!! Something we can finally agree on.

Hasta la vista, Bilow!
