U.S. slaps 12-13 pct duty on Canada softwood - CBC

OTTAWA, Oct 31 (Reuters) - The U.S. Commerce Department has slapped anti-dumping duties of between 12 and 13 percent on imports of Canadian softwood lumber, CBC television reported on Wednesday.

The department is due to announce officially at 12 noon EST (1700 GMT) whether it will impose duties on Canadian softwood, widely expected to be between 10 and 15 percent. The U.S. industry has accused Canada of unfairly subsidizing its lumber industry and has been seeking duties of 39 percent.

Both CBC and CTV television quoted the U.S. Commerce Department, which in a preliminary finding in August set a 19.31 percent countervailing duty on Canada's softwood. However, the 12 to 13 percent rate could be a national average, because rates could vary from company to company.

Maybe Canada should join or form an Opec of it's own. And turn the Natural Gas Pipeline and Hydro Lines off.
