Paul, here's one from a top notch poster (and AMD backer) on The Motley Fool, about his experience:
My XP1800 fall down, go boom!
Well, my first experience with an XP1800 hasn't been very pleasant. Near as I can tell, it spontaneously exploded.
Context: New Shuttle AK31a. Install CPU. Apply thermal tape (yes, plastic was removed). Stick on Thermalright SK6, make sure it's level, clamp down. Add Delta fan, clamp down, plug in. Power up. Span whirs, about 15 seconds later -- *whoosh* little puff of smoke comes out from under the heat sink.
Power down.
Remove HSF, inspect CPU. Corner of CPU is charred black. Remove CPU. Bottom of CPU has large brown spot.
I've done this dozens of time. I've built computers since my AT clone. I'm not new at this. For nor discernable reason, this CPU just flat out exploded. No idea why.
I'm getting a Duron and going to try this again. I'm more than a little bummed right now.
