RE "Alcatel to shed 10,000 jobs." Reports of people out of work we are hearing everyday now. SUNW yesterday and lots of other companies, tech or non-tech have already laid off more than 900,000 since Jan as reported by AD yesterday. Now, if only those laid off could be trained quickly to fill up jobs like in Nursing, Teaching and other Professional work === job areas that are in great demand worldwide.
According to the latest news from POEA (Philippine Overseas Employment Administration) they were informed by the United States (not only California as I mentioned in an earlier post) that the U.S. is greatly in need of Filipino Nurses, Teachers and other Professionals. Now with this war going on including the spread of viruses like Anthrax, Small Pox and others yet to be discovered we are going to have a huge problem. When the Baby Boomers start to retire 7 years from now in 2008, expenses in health Care will sky rocket unless we do something now.
Maybe the government should get involve --- help finance the education of young people, entice them to take Medical courses especially Nursing. Also encourage people to be teachers.
By the way the starting salary here in Silicon Valley of a Registered Nurse is $40/hr, an LVN - $30/hr and one lower than LVN is $20/hr. My brother and his wife, both nurses who moved here from Montreal, Canada about 12 years ago received starting salaries of about $21/hr each. How things have changed!
Of course we need people worldwide to have work so that they can afford to buy not only food but also other needs like Cell phones, Computers and others that have CHIPs in them. |
