um, Count, I think you've got it all wrong, actually. Fouad Ajami is considered by the vast majority of foreign policy professionals to be perhaps the single best Middle Eastern expert we have--precisely because he is both "one of them" and "one of us".... The piece of his in Foreign Affairs that you cite is neither defeatist nor anti-American nor approving of any kind of Islamic radicalism. It is, on the contrary, a depressingly clear-eyed survey of what one might call the costs of empire, which the author feels can and should be borne. As for the "brigade" reference, I would bet rather large sums of money that it had nothing to do with Tennyson, FWIW.
